This postage stamp was issued in 2011 and commemorates the life of a United States Post Office mascot named Owney.

Owney was a terrier dog adopted by the Albany, New York Post Office around 1888. He traveled over 140,000 miles throughout the 48 states and around the world as a mascot of the Railway Post Office.

Owney belonged to a clerk at the post office and he would often come with him to work. When Owney passed, his reputation remains were preserved by taxidermy. He can be seen in an exhibit at the Smithsonian Museum.

This stamp is a Forever stamp, meaning it is always valued at the First-Class letter rate. In 2024, the Forever stamp value was 73 cents, and this stamp can still be used to mail letters today.

The 2024 catalog value for a pane of 20 stamps is $30, which is double the face value.
