You just got pulled over for speeding, but you were only going 13 miles per hour. It’s the year 1901, and the first speed limit has just been put into law.
The first speed limit was a crazy fast 12 miles per hour, which seemed slow today, but it was quite high compared to the speeds people were used to at that time, with horses and bicycles.
Two years earlier, in 1899, the first ever recorded car related fatality in America occurred when a pedestrian was struck by a taxi. As cars became more numerous, so did the accidents, and communities demanded that speed be regulated by the government.
Ironically, in the same year that the first speed limit was set, in 1901, this United States postage stamp featuring an automobile was released, notice that the drivers are sitting out in the open while the passengers rode inside.
It almost looks exactly like a horse carriage, but without the horses. Thus, it’s no surprise the nickname it was given was the horseless carriage.
