Martha Washington was a first among firsts, being the first First Lady of the United States. During the American Revolution, she managed her estate, raised funds for the Continental Army, and organized aid for soldiers, playing a vital role in supporting the nation’s independence.
She stood by George Washington’s side, providing crucial moral support during the war and his presidency.
She is featured on an eight cent stamp, issued in 1902. On it is her year of birth in 1732 and year of passing in 1802.
This also marks the first time that an American woman is featured on a government issued postage stamp. She would be the only woman to do so for 34 years, until Susan B. Anthony in 1936.
Collecting stamps this way. Like this offers a glimpse into the past and helps us remember the people and events who shaped our nation.
