Is Multnomah Falls in Oregon the place where a young girl intentionally sacrificed her life by jumping off a cliff?
Multnomah Falls is located in the Columbia River Gorge, an 80 mile canyon carved out of the rock by the Columbia River over millions of years.
When a devastating plague gripped through the original habitants of this area hundreds of years ago, they believed the only way to rid of it was if a young woman from their tribe sacrificed her life by jumping off of the mountain.
In 2016, a postage stamp commemorating the gorge was issued. You can even see the size of the cliff. It’s part of the American Landmark series of stamps that started back in 2008 featuring Mount Rushmore and the Hoover Dam, and ended with the release of the Pillars of Creation and Cosmic Cliffs in 2023.
It said that the daughter of the Multnomah chief, volunteered herself as the sacrifice because of the love she had for her people. Today, the Multnomah Falls waterfall is her spirit jumping off the mountain.
