This is the first postage stamp ever made by the United States.

It was issued in 1847, making it over 175 years old.

On it, is a portrait of Benjamin Franklin.

Although Franklin was never a president, he is frequently depicted on the first stamp in many different stamp sets, as well as on the hundred dollar bill.

This is because Franklin was one of the key architects of the formation of the United States, as well as one of the drafters and signer of the Declaration of Independence.

This stamp allowed a unified postal rate for the first time, and helped support the communication infrastructure of a rapidly growing country.

In 2024, this stamp was valued at $450, in used condition.

You can own the first postage stamp of the United States.

They are readily available on websites like eBay, and make a great start into the hobby of stamp collecting.
