In 1929, the lightbulb had only been around for 50 years. Factoring the time it took to make its way into cities and homes, most adults could likely remember a time where the only light they had at night was from a candle, or from the moon.

To commemorate what could arguably be one of the top inventions in human history, this stamp was issued by the United States Postal Service.

Post Office in 1929. And the man behind this game changer was none other than Thomas Edison. Edison is also credited in the invention of the phonograph, the grandfather of recorded music, as well as one of the first motion picture devices, the great grandfather of YouTube.

On the stamp is the image of a lightbulb with the words Electric Light’s Golden Jubilee. Which means 50th anniversary.

Edison style lightbulbs have made their way back into modern farmhouse homes and hipster breweries across the country. If only stamp collecting was back in style the same way.
