I’ve found two of these missing surcharge in one lot, an envelope stuffed with the Series 1900 R184-R188 for a cheap price, guess I was lucky that day. Both are space fillers, but I’m happy to have them. Unknown what the cancel stands for. I don’t know how many of these errors where printed. They both are cancelled on the same day. I don’t think they are rare, but also think they are not common either. Does anybody have background info on these, I’d like to know more about these?
Nice find, yet again @zuzu
Too bad they have severe condition issues.
A search on the web for “C.ELEV.CO” circa 1901 gives me “Calumet Grain & Elevator Co.” Finding various references to litigations vs. the city of Chicago pertaining to a dock at a waterfront.
As for the nice SON cancel upon the surcharged example for “Ladenburg, Thalmann & Co.” findings reveal they are an investment brokerage firm.

Hi, I should have explained the other stamp was just there to show what the surcharge looked like.
Understood it was there solely for comparison, just compelled to look up the cancel is all.

There is a blog/website called “1898Revenues” that you might be interested in. I’ve contributed alot of information there, double transfers, research on cancels.

Thalmann had a seat on the New York Stock Exchange, and Ladebburg was a banker in Germany!
