This beautifully engraved postage stamp was issued 120 years ago in 1904. It commemorates the 100 year anniversary of the Louisiana Purchase in 1803.

The United States purchased 828,000 square miles from France for $15 million. Or roughly 412 million in today’s money.

However, it should be noted that the thousands of Native Americans living in this area did not consent to the purchase.

Their displacement and treatment is one of America’s most darkest moments in history.

On the stamp shows a map of the United States. The shaded area is the territory that was purchased.

To give you a sense of the size, it nearly doubled the land size of the country at that time and covered 14 different states.

In 2024, this stamp was worth $125. Stamp collecting is a great hobby and investment opportunity if you’re a fan of history.
