The United States Scott #233, part of the 1893 Columbian Exposition issue, commemorates the 400th anniversary of Christopher Columbus’s first voyage to the Americas. This series of sixteen stamps marked a pivotal moment in U.S. philately as the first commemorative stamps issued by the United States.
Design & Print
The 4 cent denomination, designated “Fleet of Columbus,” depicts an engraved scene of Columbus’s three ships, the Niña, the Pinta, and the Santa María, as rendered by the Bureau of Engraving and Printing based on historical illustrations.
The stamp was printed in deep ultramarine ink, a color choice that not only enhanced its aesthetic appeal but also differentiated it from other denominations within the series.
Printed by the American Bank Note Company, the production of Scott #233 reflects the technical sophistication of the time. Approximately 19 million copies of the 4 cent “Fleet of Columbus” stamp were produced in 1893.
Postal Usage
The 4-cent denomination accommodated rates for mailing letters weighing up to two ounces, which doubled the base first-class rate of 2 cents established in 1883. Additionally, the stamp could be used to meet combinations of rates for special services such as registry or international correspondence.
At the time, these postal rates were governed by legislation such as the Postal Act of 1879, which standardized rates and classes to improve the efficiency and accessibility of the U.S. postal system.
Identification
Several features allow for precise identification of Scott #233 among the Columbian series. The engraved lines of the ship masts, rigging, and sea waves provide a level of detail that reflects the craftsmanship of the American Bank Note Company. Margins feature intricate scrollwork that frames the depiction of the fleet, a hallmark of the series’ design aesthetic.
The top left corner says “1492” while the top right corner says “1892”. Not to be confused with the 1992 reissue (Scott #2624b) that says “1992” in the top right corner.
The stamp’s ultramarine color distinguishes it from the other denominations. However there is a variety of this stamp that was printed in the same blue color ink as the 1 cent denomination in this series, Scott #230. This printing error is scarce, and is designated as Scott #233a, which has a value $20,000 in 2025.
