Did you know the Statue of Liberty has an older sister? The lesser known Statue of Freedom sits atop the U. S. Capitol Building. It was crafted in 1860, making it 26 years older than the Statue of Liberty, which was erected in 1886. Designed by Thomas Crawford, it stands 19 feet tall, with an eagle topped helmet.

In one hand is a sheathed sword, and in the other is a shield and laurel wreath of victory, symbolizing peace through strength. It was originally hoisted the Capitol. to the Capitol building during the Civil War, as the country grappled with division. In 1922, she was featured as the highest denomination in a 23 stamp set, with a value of 5 compared to her younger sister.
